What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a gentle form of bodywork developed in Australia, using light, precise moves over muscle and connective tissue, each followed by a deliberate pause. It works with the body's fascia and nervous system rather than against them, prompting the body's own capacity to release tension and re-regulate.
Those pauses are central to how it works. Rather than manipulating or forcing change, Bowen gives the nervous system time to register each sequence and respond, which is part of why the effects often continue to unfold in the days after a session.
Sometimes called the Bowen technique or Bowen method, it's gentle enough to suit everyone from newborns to older adults.
What People Come In For
People find their way to Bowen for all sorts of reasons. Often it's the sense of being wound-up, sore, or worn thin, and wanting something gentle that genuinely helps.
Many people come to Bowen looking for help with:
Better sleep and deeper rest
Feeling calmer and less wound-up
Chronic stress and the tension it leaves in the body
Everyday aches, tightness and stiffness
Long-held tension through the back, neck and shoulders
Sport injury support (ankles, knees, tennis elbow etc)
Headaches and migraines
Easier, freer movement
Recovery support after a demanding period
Feeling more like themselves again
What is a Bowen Therapy session like?
Bowen is soft: a series of gentle, rolling moves over muscle and soft tissue, paired with intentional pauses that allow your body and nervous system to respond. Those pauses are where the change happens. Rather than forcing anything, Bowen gives your nervous system the space and time it needs to settle.
This can feel counterintuitive at first, since we're used to hands-on therapy meaning constant pressure. Yet most people are surprised, often from their very first session, by the shift they feel. Many find the deep relaxation lets them drift close to sleep, and most leave feeling looser, lighter and calmer than when they walked in.

If you've never had Bowen before, here's how it goes:
We start with a short chat about how you've been feeling and what's brought you in
You lie comfortably on the treatment table, in something light and loose
Sharon works through the gentle rolling moves of Bowen, with quiet pauses in between for your nervous system to respond and settle
Afterward, plenty of people feel deeply relaxed, so it's worth keeping your day easy and drinking a little extra water

Bowen is a complementary healthcare modality that sits beautifully alongside the rest of your wellbeing routine. If you love a good massage, Bowen can be a wonderful alternative form of care, gentle, restorative, and easy to fold in alongside whatever else supports you.
People often choose Bowen because it is:
Gentle and non-invasive
Suitable for all ages
Works with your nervous system, not against it
A softer option for people who find other hands-on treatments too intense
Sharon holds a Masters in Bowen Therapy and is an accredited member of the Bowen Association of Australia. She also holds a Diploma in B.E.S.T and Masters in Reiki, Ashati and Alsemia.

Common Questions
-
It's one of the most common reasons people come in. Bowen is a gentle way to work with tension and tightness through the back and body, and many clients find it helps them move more easily and feel more comfortable. It isn't a replacement for medical care, so if you're dealing with something ongoing it's worth checking in with your GP as well.
-
Massage generally works directly on muscles to relax them in the moment. Bowen uses lighter, more precise moves with pauses in between, working with the nervous system and fascia to prompt the body to release tension itself. Many people who love massage find Bowen a lovely complement to it, or a gentler alternative.
-
Everyone responds differently, but most people feel deeply relaxed, looser and calmer. Some notice a shift straight away, others over the following few days as the body continues to settle.
-
